the winter is kind of a funny time to start this page as nothing is growing in the garden currently, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of work being done! this series of blog posts will follow my backyard gardening and community gardening. recently i've only been gardening at the community garden near my apartment. i have so much love for this garden! for one it is fully communal. no beds belong to anyone, they are all shared. most of our produce gets given to the community after harvesting. i've never been involved with a community garden that functions like this.
we've been raising the beds with lumber and getting them prepped for spring planting. recently, that has involved sifting a lot of soil that the garden has been given, wheeling it over to the newly raised beds, and amending it with compost. so far we've fully raised 4 beds, lined the outer rim of the bed with garlic, planted cover crop, and covered with leaves. the leaves mostly just blow away though… i'm so grateful to have access to this wonderful garden! it's one of the few energizing sources in my life right now, and a great way to get myself out of the house.
another awesome feature of the garden is the CHICKENS!! we have 12 hens that have either been rescued or donated to us. most of the hens are older and don't produce many eggs, but i really just love hanging around them. they're such silly little creatures. i've connected most with chip. she's a silkie and just looks so funny and cute.
